Ganwoljae Silver Grass Hike: Autumn Fields and the Deer Farm Approach

Between two mountain ridges, the landscape opens into a field. Pale grass covers the slopes above a curving road, with the pass forming the center of the scene. The view is about the space between mountains as much as the peaks themselves.

The Ganwoljae silver grass hike leads to the meeting point of Sinbulsan and Ganwolsan in Ulju, Ulsan. Part of the Yeongnam Alps, this pass is a destination in its own right. An autumn outing does not have to continue to either summit.

A relatively gentle approach still calls for a substantial walk. Korea Tourism Organization describes the Deer Farm approach as about 6 km to Ganwoljae. This is the one-way approach, not the total distance for a return along the same trail.

Operating arrangements can change. Check the official visitor information before traveling.

The walkway gives the field a visible direction. Nearby flower heads rise around the boards, while the farther slopes remain in view. A small section of trail can hold both the detail of the grass and the scale of the pass.

Moving along the established path changes which ridge forms the background. The field is not one fixed viewpoint; its curves and the surrounding mountains keep rearranging the scene.

Why the pass can be the destination

The official KTO destination guide places Ganwoljae where the ridges of Sinbulsan and Ganwolsan meet. That geography explains the attraction: the high ground drops into an open space rather than ending at a single summit marker.

There is no need to add another peak simply to make the outing feel complete. A walk focused on the pass lets the boardwalks, grass and two ridgelines stay at the center of the day.

One side of the pass catches warm light while the opposite slope remains darker. The contrast makes the folds of the ground easy to see. Close grass heads and a distant ridge bring different textures into the same view.

The precise color and density of the grass vary with the season and weather. Treat the landscape as an autumn setting rather than a promise of identical golden fields on every travel date.

Reading the approach distance correctly

The road bends with the hillside before reaching the open pass. The approach is part of the outing, with the nearer slope repeatedly blocking and revealing the wider view.

KTO calls the Deer Farm route a relatively level approach of roughly 6 km. Do not read that as a 6 km round trip. Returning by the same route adds the descent to the approach distance, while continuing to a summit makes a different hike again.

Nearer grass gives the foreground a fine texture; distant mountains fade into softer bands. The field and the ridges belong to one landscape, rather than competing for attention.

Plan this as a seasonal mountain walk, with the approach and return considered together. The pass offers enough to make an autumn destination without borrowing the schedule of a festival that has already ended.

With room in the day for the full walk, reaching Ganwoljae can be an opportunity to pause. The open ground between the mountains is the reason to come, rather than a brief stop before the next peak.
